Lectures on family issues in contemporary Japanese society.
The lectures will be based on sociology and related fields:
law, economics, population studies, and so on.

Title: Basics of Academic Writing

Contents: An academic paper, such as a term paper or bachelor's thesis,
must fulfill some requirements.
(1) It must be based on facts and logics.
(2) Sections and paragraphs must be arranged with well-structured organization.
(3) Descriptions must be correct and can hardly be misunderstood.
(4) Author's opinions must be distinguished from findings of others' works.
(5) The author must give appropriate citations.
In this class students learn rules and techniques for academic writing
through writing term papers.
Main topics are the following:
Students also learn how to comment other's writing through peer-review activities.

Papers (in Japanese or English) of contemporary Japanese studies chosen by students are criticized from the four viewpoints:
(a) scanning of key concepts,
(b) skimming of the structure of the paper,
(c) tables and figures, and
(d) logics.
We take two weeks to read one paper with four students making presentations from the four viewpoints above.
The goal of this class is
(1) to learn how to search and get papers,
(2) to learn how to read papers, and
(3) to acquire skills in visual presentation and discussion.
